Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo Review

Product sent for testing by Influenster

Good evening, dear readers, and Happy New Year! I am so excited to be spending time on my blog after taking a much needed break, and I'm eager to see where 2014 will take me. Let's start right in with a review, shall we?
I was sent the Violet Vox Box by Influenster, and tonight I want to focus on Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo.  I have to say that if you would have told me I would be excited to try out a dry shampoo a year ago, I would have thought you had lost your mind, but I was ridiculously excited to get to try out this product. I've got a mobile 9 month old on my hands, so my showers are super fast, and my poor hair has been left to be washed later in the day when the little man takes a nap. Oh, to be able to not have to deal with that and to just spray away the oil!

In order to test this out, I obviously wanted to have dirty hair to start out with. That was very easy to accomplish as both me and the little man are feeling sick so there was no shower this morning in the cards for me. I've been sick for a couple days, and while I *have* washed my hair during that time, I have not used any styling products between the last washing and today's test run of the dry shampoo. I have no idea if that would impact the results or not, but I wanted to at least throw that out there. Here's a lovely (ha!) photo of my dirty and oily hair. For science! Or something like it....

Definitely not my most flattering photo, and the lack of makeup is not helping.

I followed the application instructions on the bottle and sprayed generously on my roots and throughout my hair. If you have dark hair and haven't used a dry shampoo before, you might be a little shocked to see your hair turn grey where there is a large volume of product. I'm not sure if all dry shampoos do this as I have only tried a couple brands, but I have experienced this phenomena with those that I have used.
Woo! Making myself look older!

I was fully prepared for the greying of my hair, but I was not prepared to have my nasal passages assaulted by the powerful chemical plus perfume aroma that released from the nozzle. The hubby called it modern urban grunge. Either way, it was not pleasant. I fully believe this product is ideal for the clean freak that is obsessed with the smell of cleaning products, as the perfume fragrance that was added definitely did not conceal its presence. I went to town brushing this out of my hair in an effort to get the smell gone. I no longer cared about the oil at this point.

As you can (hopefully) see in this photo, my hair looks so much cleaner than it did beforehand. What this photo unfortunately cannot show is the smell remained in my hair! I wasn't too surprised by that fact, but I had hoped beyond hope that it would brush out. In just the short time it took me to get a good photo, the smell was giving me a nasty headache. By the time I set my camera down on the coffee table, my darling husband, who had been watching me the entire time, informed me I needed to get in the shower to get that atrocious smell out pronto. Ok, he wasn't exactly that eloquent, but I'd prefer to not use his exact language in my blog. It's rather disappointing that a product that was supposed to save me time (and keep my hair dry) ended up taking more time and a washing to get that wretched stench out of my hair. I will say that Clean Freak did such an amazing job absorbing the excess oil that my hair felt like straw after washing it out. I'm sitting here typing out this blog post with coconut oil soaking in my hair to keep it from being a total fire hazard. Good times!

For those of you that want to live dangerously or have a blind date you would like to end early (either by making your date end it or you end it by having the worst headache of your life), it retails for $5.99. You can't say I didn't warn you though!

  2. Hmm, that's really strange! I have this one as well and I've never minded the smell - it's not very noticeable to me. Maybe you got a bad one... or maybe I just got lucky with a good one.

    1. I have no idea, but it isn't pleasant. I've got a pretty sensitive nose, but my husband does not, so that makes me think that there is something wrong with the bottle I got. Whether or not it was a bad batch or the way this particular product is in general, I have no idea. Thanks for your feedback!

  3. That's too bad--I've been using their curling creme and, while it does have a scent to it, it's grape seed and fruity. I love the curling product and have wondered how their others are. I'm kind of bummed that you had such a bad experience trying this one! I've always been a little nervous to try dry shampoo out, but at least this narrows down the ones to try when I do.

  8. Very useful, informative review. I hate when a product's smell is so bad that you can't use it. Such a shame. Also, it's good to hear that someone else didn't have the same problem. I guess, as ever, proceeding with caution is best.
