New Year's Eve Nails with China Glaze The Glam Finale

Press Sample

Greetings, dear readers! I hope this post finds you well! I'm laying low this evening at home while 2017 races to an end and 2018 begins. Long gone are the New Year's Eves of the past where I would stay up to watch the ball drop in Times Square, as broadcast on my television. My kids like to wake up early, and I like my sleep. Instead, the hubby and I will enjoy some sparkling wine after we put the littles to bed before heading to bed ourselves, probably by 10pm. In spite of sleeping through the year change, my nails are still decorated. What could be better than utilizing shades from The Glam Finale Collection by China Glaze to mark the occasion!

Products Used:

China Glaze: Don't Be A Snow-flake
China Glaze: New Year, New Boo
China Glaze: Slay Bells Ring
China Glaze: Disco Ball Drop
China Glaze: Liquid Leather
Rica: Whiteout
Ejiubas: EJB-03 Stamping Plate
CICI & SISI: Merry Christmas 2014
KBShimmer: Clear On Top top coat

While writing this post as the year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting back on the year. It was another busy year for the blog!

2017 started off with a trip to Long Beach to attend the International Salon and Spa Expo. I had been interested in attending this cash-and-carry beauty professionals only for a few years now, but 2017 was the year that the timing finally worked out for me.

In April, I headed off to Brooklyn, New York for the spring session of The Polish Convention. The event was filled with indie nail polish makers and fans, and it was great to reconnect with friends again as well as meet so many that I have only interacted with online.

This July, I made my way to Las Vegas to attended Cosmoprof North America, a beauty-to-beauty trade show that I have had the pleasure of attending in previous years. I've always enjoyed this show as I stumble across new and new-to-me brands to share with you throughout the year. This year was no exception to the rule; I visited a lot of booths and found so many products to suit your every beauty need!

My year of blog travels ended off in Los Angeles to cover The Makeup Show LA. While this beauty professionals-only cash-and-carry show is smaller than the International Salon and Spa Expo, I still really enjoyed the smaller, more intimate setting of this show. I picked up a few new things to try out and look forward to sharing them with you.

As far as 2018, I have a few things in the works. I'm hoping to continue to attend assorted trade shows and conventions and bring the newest and greatest beauty products to the blog. I also have something big up my sleeve, but I'm keeping that under wraps until it (hopefully) works out.

Until next time, dear readers, have a wonderful and safe night, and I'll be seeing you next year!
XO!

Stamped Chevron Nail Art Design with Zoya Party Girls

Press Sample

Greetings, dear readers! This week has flown by, even with the small break for Christmas. Also, I can't believe there are only a few days left in 2017! While I'm never really one for resolutions, I am making a list of goals for myself and my blog for this next year. One of my biggest goals is to have more nail art on my blog. This has been something I've missed a lot lately and have been wanting to do for quite some time now. I decided to join a weekly nail art challenge, and while I may miss some of the prompts, either due to timing or having issues with inspiration, I am hoping to stick close to it for as long as I enjoy it. That said, let's jump in on my latest nail art look this evening!

My days starts early between getting my kids to their preschool/daycare programs and getting to work. As a result of this, I had the pleasure of experiencing some of the most beautifully coloured sunrises recently. From the purple-hued clouds to the vibrant coral sunrises, I knew I just had to get those colours on my nails! These are colours I probably never would have paired together on my own accord, but nature was certainly inspiring! While I opted to deviate from a fluffy cloud design that fully captured the look of the sunrises, my nail art design still captures the colour scheme and elements from them perfectly.

To create this look, I started off by applying a single coat of Zoya Nail Polish Nadia. While I wanted some bare nail peeking through, I didn't want a true negative space look. After applying a layer of Ellagee Polish Lickity Split Latex-Free Mani Mask around my nails and cuticles, I used Zoya polish in the shade Danielle to stamp an image from the Pueen Fairytale Lover 01 onto my nails.

To finish the look, I used chevron nail vinyls from Calm Your Tips since I can't paint a straight line to save my life and added Zoya nail polish in the shade Solstice on the lower half of my nails. I sealed everything in with top coat and voila!

While I admittedly don't love this design, this was still a fun nail art look for me to create. It challenged me to think outside my normal colour pairing scheme, and I am thankful for that! I also have to note I was amazed with just how well Danielle stamped, especially for not being a true stamping polish in the first place! I was fully prepared to have to work on the stamping to get it to work, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it stamp just as readily as those designed for it. And for the record, my heart belongs to Solstice! This shade seems a little out of place for the season, but I love it so much and don't care about that!

What do you think of this design? Would you normally pair these colours together? Do you have any specific goals or resolutions for next year? I'd love to hear from you!

Until next time, dear readers, have a wonderful evening!
XO!

Lyn B Designs January Polish of the Month: Pyrope

Press Sample

Greetings, dear readers! I hope this post finds you well! It seems to strange to have taken a week off from blogging, but it was definitely needed with the craziness of the holiday season taking hold. This time of year is always hard on me, as the short days with little light eventually get to me, right in time for the festivities. While I have never been officially diagnosed, I'm pretty sure I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, as I find myself falling into a depressed funk every single year at the same time. I'm hoping to just get through it for the time being as the days get longer, but next year I'll be taking some steps to try to combat it earlier before it gets to that point. At least I was able to enjoy Christmas with my boys yesterday, even if it was loud with all the noises coming from their new construction equipment toys! Now onto today's blog post!

Indie polish brand Lyn B Designs has been releasing a Polish of the Month for quite some time now, and for today's blog post, I have the upcoming January Polish of the Month to share with you. Presenting: Pyrope!

Pyrope is a perfect combination of fascinating nail polish finishes. This beauty starts out with a mauve-purple base before shifting over to red, orange, and then gold, all with a glorious holographic finish. Add to that the orange holo micro shimmer and a flash of blue flakes, and you have a stunning polish shade that is sure to captivate your attention in the new year!

I really enjoyed the pigmentation and thickness of this polish. I didn't find it to be too thick or thin for my application preference, and I was able to reach opacity with just two coats. Overall the formula was easy to work with; however, it should be noted that the blue flakes can be a little sharp so this polish is best applied using a slightly heavier hand/thicker coat. This way the polish and flakes floated over your nails to coat them. You will want to take care to not overwork areas on your nails as this can cause these flakes to drag your base colour. This issue is likely only to be noticed by those that normally prefer to paint with ultra thin coats, but I did want to make sure to mention it. As long as I applied this with a medium-to-thick coat, I had no issues whatsoever.

I applied two coats of Pyrope and top coat for the photos in this blog post.

Pyrope will be launching January 1st on the Lyn B Designs website. It will be available the entire month of January and will retail for $10.

Are you excited about the January Polish of the Month shade? I really love the shiftiness of it!

Until next time, dear readers, have a wonderful day!

Literary Lacquers: Alice in Lacquerland Collection

Press Sample

Greetings, dear readers, and happy Monday! I hope your week has been off to a wonderful start! While nothing in particular has happened, I have definitely had a case of the Mondays with lots of little things going wrong. At least I got some baking in today and I'm finally sitting down to write my post for the day.

My dear friend Amy of Literary Lacquers has been at it again, and this time she is releasing a collection I have been eager to see from the brand for a long time! Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, let me present to you Literary Lacquers' Alice in Lacquerland Collection! The collection consists of six core shades and a special Limited Edition Gift with Purchase that will only be available for a short time. Let's jump in and get a closer look at the core shades and then check out the gift with purchase polish.

Grin Without a Cat
There is no doubt that Alice in Wonderland is filled with many lovable characters, but I just had to start this post off with the polish inspired by my favorite, the Cheshire Cat. Grin Without a Cat is a glorious purple to pink multichrome polish packed with shimmers to add extra dazzle to your nails. This shifty beauty certainly suits the inspiration nicely, and I am happy to report it applies really easily to the nails. It does have a strong scent that is often seen with multichrome polishes, but I didn't notice it after it had dried and I added my top coat. You'll just want to be sure to apply this polish in a well ventilated area. I have it shown here with three coats plus top coat, but those that tend to apply thicker coats may find that two is enough for opacity.

Retail: $12

Always Tea Time
It truly is a mad, mad world when it is always 6 o'clock and time for tea! There's no time to do the dishes and the only thing one can do is move on to the next setting.....wait, this could almost be my life at home with my kids! Whether you're game for a never-ending round of tea or not, you're sure to be happy sporting this rose-coloured holographic polish on your nails! This is the type of pink I personally gravitate towards the most often, and I am delighted to see it as part of this collection! In true Literary Lacquers fashion, the formula is top notch, and I had no issues with application. Shown here with two coats plus top coat.

Retail: $12

Tulgey Wood
Are you ready for some fun trivia? The never-ending forest that Alice wondered into actually did not have a name. It was Disney that gave Tugley Wood the official name with the release of the animated film, and it came from the poem from Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There describing the location where the Jabberwock lives. No matter how you look at it, the polish Tugley Wood certainly has a way of drawing you in for long stretches of time! This warm brown holographic polish is certainly captivating! The formula of this beauty was top notch, and I have it shown here with two coats to opacity plus top coat.

Retail: $12

Curiouser and Curiouser!
When you cannot find actual words to describe what it is you are seeing, the only thing you can possibly do it to create your own! While an Alice-inspired collection can go so many different directions, between all the interesting character, events, and quotes, I am glad to see this particular quote make it into this collection. I adore this shade of blue, and I've certainly been dazzled by the addition of all the holographic glitters! Like the rest of the shades in this collection, I had no application issues and found it to be the perfect consistency for my taste. I have it shown here with two coats plus top coat for these photos.

Retail: $12

The Golden Afternoon
Is it possible to hear the words "The Golden Afternoon" and not instantly start singing, either out loud or in your head, the song of the same name from the Disney animation? That is where my head goes every time, although it is actually a reference to the prefatory poem to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It was on a boat trip where Lewis Carroll dreamt up the tale of Alice and her adventures when asked by a trio of sisters to tell a story. Should you choose to reminisce about your first time watching the singing flowers or embrace the introductory poem, this golden beauty is sure to warm your heart! This gold polish is stunning, and I only wish it were available sooner for everyone to add it to their holiday manicures this year! I have it shown here with two coats plus top coat.

Retail: $12

Six Impossible Things
Alice in Wonderland is an endearing story to me because of the Alice's naivety and her ability to believe in things that are generally accepted to be impossible. It adds a certain child-like charm to the story and what makes me come back to it again and again over the years no matter how old I become. "Six Impossible Things" may be a reference within the story itself, but for me, it is so much more than that for the aforementioned reasons, and the perfect polish to end up the collection of core shades. The tomato red jelly polish is loaded with glitters. I used two coats to opacity, and I added top coat for these photos.

Retail: $10

Limited Edition Gift With Purchase

As I mentioned earlier in this post, Literary Lacquers will also be offering a Limited Edition polish that will only be available as a gift with purchase for a limited time.

Be What You Would Seem To Be

As if the latter was truly the "simple" way of saying be what you would seem to be! Be What You Would Seem To Be is a lovely almost neon purple holographic polish that is LOADED with glitters. It is such a pretty shade, and I have it shown here with two coats plus top coat. This particular polish may require three coats if you have much longer nails or tend to paint with very thin coats.

Be What You Would Seem To Be will be included with purchases of $48+ from December 26th through January 5th.

The Alice in Lacquerland Collection will be launching on the Literary Lacquers website Tuesday, December 26th at 12 noon MT. While the collection itself is going to be a core collection for the Literary Lacquers lineup, I definitely suggest picking it up the first two weeks after the launch so you can have the beautiful Be What You Would Seem To Be as well!

Do you have any favorite shades from the Alice in Lacquerland Collection? I keep trying to choose a single favorite, but I love the different colours too much to be able to do so! That being said, I'm planning to use Curiouser and Curiouser! in the next day or two for some festive nail art. I'm also kind of not-so-secretly hoping (*hint hint, nudge nudge*) that this collection can be expanded with more shades in the future, if only because I love Amy's work and I would love to see her take on more aspects from the Alice novels. The Alice in Lacquerland is a must-have for any Alice in Wonderland fan!

Until next time, dear readers, have a wonderful night!

Holly Nail Art with China Glaze The Glam Finale Collection

Press Sample

Greetings, dear readers, and TGIF! I'm checking in with my first holiday nail art design this season! I've been a little distracted with everything else going on this month, but I figured I better get started with the nail art if I actually want to create some this month. I have a few more ideas in mind, and while I suspect I won't get to create all of them, I'm hoping to get at least two more designs on my nails and posted.

For today's blog post, I wanted to share with you my freehand holly nail art look utilizing shades from the new China Glaze The Glam Finale Collection. I actually had attempted a similar type design using stamping plates, but the red and green shades I used here are matte polishes that just dried too quickly. Of course I didn't take that into consideration with freehand painting either. The super quick dry time is great for solid nails, but I'm not a fan when it comes to trying to manipulate it for art. In the end, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.

I used the following shades from the China Glaze The Glam Finale Collection to create this look:

Toast It Up!
Big Hair & Bubbly
Santa's Side Chic
The Perfect Holly-Day

I hope you've enjoyed today's nail art look! Enjoy the weekend!

#TBTBeauty with Tarte Cosmetics Showstopper Clay Palette

Greetings, dear readers! I have a slightly different kind of post to share with you. I recently attempted to organize some of my makeup items, and while my system still needs some work, I was able to rediscover old favorites and toss a few things that just didn't WOW me. I don't know about you, but I have the tendency to just use my newest products and my older favorites end up shoved in a drawer and forgotten about. It's actually quite sad to see something I once wore a lot, when it was new, of course, sit and go unloved! Since #ThrowbackThursday is a thing, I thought it would be a great opportunity to have a little #TBT fun by using my older palettes and products again.

To jumpstart this project, I was first drawn towards my Tarte Cosmetics Showstopper Clay Palette.  The limited edition, rounded palette consists of six eyeshadows, a blush, a bronzer, and a blush. While the colours aren't particularly unique in the makeup world, I was drawn towards this palette when it was released as an easy way to take cosmetics with me while traveling and still pack light. Most of the cosmetic items I want in a convenient hand-sized product? Sign me up! I've since moved over primarily to magnetic palettes while traveling so I can customize my looks, but I did end up taking the Showstopper Clay Palette with me to Los Angeles for The Makeup Show last month. I just wasn't in the mindset to go all out and put together a look after the distraction and our evacuation from the wildfires here in Sonoma County so this palette was a lifesaver! Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration, but my point is it kept me looking together for the events over the weekend.

Because I now work outside the house on Thursdays, I opted to keep a lighter hand and went with a more natural day time look. There aren't any wild colours in the Tarte Cosmetics Showstopper Clay Palette so I don't think I could go too crazy anyway. You could still up the intensity if you wanted to for a great dramatic daytime or evening look.

I completed the look by popping on Ardell Lashes in 120 Demi Black and added a quick coat of NYX Cosmetics Lip Lingerie in Ruffle Trim onto my lips.

The Tarte Cosmetics Showstopper Clay Palette is no longer available for purchase, but they have so many fabulous items to choose from that I'm sure you can find something that speaks to you if you are in the market for new makeup.

While I don't plan to do these #TBTBeauty every Thursday, I am hoping to occasionally have them up on my blog. Unfortunately, this may mean I end up using a product, like the Showstopper palette in this evening's post, that may not be available for purchase any longer. I have tried to avoid adding content prominently featuring no-longer-available products, so let me know what you think about this. Do you like it and (hopefully) help you shop your own stash again rather than feeling the urge to shop new? Does it rub you the wrong way? I truly welcome your feedback on this idea! I personally think this is a fun project, and I'd love to see others jump in on the #TBTBeauty train!

Until next time, dear readers, have a wonderful night!
XO!

BeautySoClean: Candy Cane Scented Brush Cleanser

Press Sample

Happy hump day, dear readers! Is it just me, or are the days going by faster than ever now? With the holiday season in full swing, my days are filled with more events and activities than normal, and there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day. Thankfully the gift shopping is done and the gifts that need to be shipped out are wrapped and scheduled to be picked up later today! I keep telling myself I really should just shop online and have items shipped directly to the recipient, both to save on time and possibly shipping costs, but I really enjoy the full experience of hand selecting gifts, usually locally when I can, and then wrapping. Next year may be the year it is all deemed to be "too much", but for now, I don't mind the extra tasks for the month. Now on to today's post!

Let me just go ahead and start this post by saying these photos are a lie. While attending The Makeup Show in Los Angeles last month, I was provided with this bottle of BeautySoClean's Conditioning Brush Cleanser in the scent Candy Cane to test out. Given that the bottle also included images of traditional candy canes, one might think it is safe to assume this cleanser would smell like peppermint. While peppermint is far from a favorite scent of mine in general, I do like to surround myself with it often over the month of December for the holidays. This Conditioning Brush Cleanser, on the other hand, smells like a combination of alcohol and lime. There may be the slightest teensiest hint of peppermint, but in truth, I think I'm only fooling myself into believing the scent is there since I want it to be so badly. While this is ultimately a brush cleanser and what I should be focusing on, it was a major disappointment when it came to the scent factor.

In spite of my issues with the lack of peppermint scent, I still wanted to give this brush cleanser a fair shot. I normally deep clean my makeup brushes every week, and I also like to spot clean my brushes after each use, both to help rid any excess colour that may remain from products and to remove any bacteria that could potentially be lurking there. While my brushes are for my use alone, it gives me greater confidence that my makeup is as clean as possible and increasing the life of my makeup. This was the first I have used BeautySoClean products, and I was pretty happy overall with how will it cleaned my brushes. To clean my makeup brushes, I would spritz the cleanser with a few pumps onto each brush and then wipe my brushes on a clean wash cloth to remove any makeup residue. One spritz/wipe cycle was generally sufficient at removing product from my thinner brushes while my powder and blush brushes generally required a second, if not third, spritz/wipe cycle to remove the excess makeup residue. While I'm not entirely sure how long the scent lingered in my brushes, after spot cleaning them after makeup application in the morning, I wouldn't notice the scent on my brushes the next morning.

Final Thoughts

While the Conditioning Brush Cleanser certainly stood up to the task of spot cleaning my brushes, and I liked the convenient 2oz size from traveling, I still can't bring myself to get past the scent issue. The Candy Cane/peppermint fragrance I was expecting was just not there, and as much as I like citrus scents, the alcohol plus lime combination is just too repellent for me to continue using it. Something I did find interesting about my experience with this particular product is that it isn't on the BeautySoClean website, nor has it been since I received this just over a month ago. I did some more digging so I could find a store or website that might carry this particular product for you, and all I could find was a blog post from Dec 2012 and sites that no longer have it listed as "In stock". According to Beautylish, a website that did sell it at one time, the Candy Cane Conditioning Brush Cleanser was a limited edition scent released for the holidays. Given the odd scent and the fact that this brush cleanser contains many natural ingredients (a chamomile-type flower extract, lime oil, and willow bark extract), I cannot help but wonder if my bottle of brush cleanser is actually five years old and one or more of the natural ingredients has taken a turn. I must admit this has left a less than favorable impression of the brand on me, and I am hesitant to recommend the brand or try any of their other products. If you have tried this or any other products from BeautySoClean, I would love to hear about your experiences, be it good or bad!

Until next time, dear readers, have a wonderful day!

Zoya Party Girls Dotticure

Press Sample

Happy Monday, dear readers! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! It was a busy one around here with assorted errands, and of course, spending some quality time with my family. Last week was pretty intense as I worked from sun rise to just before passing out at night; even running errands with my oldest son was fun! We also got our tree decorated and have been enjoying sitting together near the glowing lights in the evenings.

In spite of all the business, I still found a little bit of time to play around with the new Party Girls Collection by Zoya Nail Polish. I've been craving a fun dotticure lately, and this collection was the perfect fit! I also wanted a fun base to go along with my dots. Rather than sticking with a single shade, I used the following Zoya shades and painted one of the colours on each of my nails:

Kelsey
Isadora
Fallon
Landon

I then followed up with my dotting tools and randomly placed dots in different sizes over the base colours. After a quick coat of top coat, my colourful and easy nail art design was complete!

I'm really loving how this manicure turned out! I've never really considered myself a die-hard fan of dots in general, but I keep getting drawn to them in nail art looks. For it being such a simple technique, it is rather amazing how different a design can look based on the colours selected and the size and density of the dots!

Do you have a nail art design that you keep getting drawn towards? I'd love to hear about your favorite designs or colour combinations!

Until next time, dear readers, I hope you have a wonderful day!

Out of This World Nails with Born Pretty Store Stamping Plate

Press Sample

Greetings, dear readers! I hope this post finds you well and you have been having a wonderful week thus far. As for myself, I've been putting in extra hours at work, and I am really feeling it already! I'm a little worn out and hoping both my kids opt to take a nap today so I can get one myself! Ha! Now to cut the chit chat short and jump in on today's blog post!

I've really been missing out on doing nail art as often as I used to, and I am so thankful to have Born Pretty Store both challenge and inspire me! Their nail art supplies are fun and affordable; what could be better?

One of the latest items I have received to review is this cute space-themed plate. I love that the variety on this plate includes different planets and asteroids, and how cute is the little alien! I was definitely eager to give my nails some out of this world treatment, and this plate was the perfect accompaniment to my nail art design. Check it out!

This particular nail art design really allowed me to test out the etching of many images on this plate! I don't always have the opportunity to do so, and I was really happy to actually try these multiple images out on my nails!

As you can see, I utilized the traditional stamping technique as well as reverse stamping. I was really pleased with how deeply etched these images were, and I had no issues with picking up very crisp images of my stamping polishes onto my stamping head!

I really enjoyed trying out this plate! If you are interested in stamping nail art techniques and outer space, this plate is definitely for you!
