Guilt-Free Chocolate: Covergirl TruNaked Chocoholic Eyeshadow Palette

When the Chocoholic eyeshadow palette by Covergirl dropped at my local Walmart, I knew I had to have it! I have a sweet tooth in general, but my love of chocolate reigns supreme. While I find scented non-lip makeup products to be unnecessary, albeit fun, I was more than willing to make an exception for this palette!

The TruNaked Chocoholic palette consists of eight polishes in matte and shimmer finishes, ranging from nude browns, touches of plums, and even a deep olive-leaning hue thanks to the added sparkle. I loved that it has the elements of nude palettes that I enjoy, but also had some interesting shades to keep it from being just another “boring” or “basic” eyeshadow palette.

I discovered quickly to appreciate the colour variety with this palette as the scent option unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. While there certainly are chocolatey notes to the scent, the fragrance is far too synthetic for my taste. That being said, the products are going on my eyes and won’t be smelled often beyond initial opening and application; I was willing to accept this limitation at the end of the day.

The Chocoholic palette was decently pigmented, especially when you take into consideration it is a drugstore palette. However, these swatches weren’t indicative of the blending quality of these eyeshadows. While I had previously stumbled across a positive review that gave me the little nudge I needed to buy this palette, my experience has not been very positive. To start, I found these to apply patchy to my eyes no matter what eyeshadow brushes I used. While the colour would build up for me, they didn’t want to blend together as seamlessly as I like. I’m usually willing to make small concessions with ultra affordable palettes, but there was just something about this palette that rubbed me the wrong way from the moment I used it to create eye looks.  Nothing turned out quite right, either due to the patchy issues or the blending. While the colour options initially helped grab my attention, I found myself surprisingly uninspired by this palette. In the end, I’m no longer convinced this assortment of shades and finishes is truly sufficient to create on point eye looks on its own. Maybe I just have unreasonable expectations, but I like my palettes to be able to stand alone. I want it to be optional to pull in outside extras, not a requirement.

While the synthetic nature of the chocolate fragrance wasn’t a total deal breaker for me, it was still disappointing that I wouldn’t be able to get my chocolate fix with a deep whiff upon opening. Perhaps I have just become too picky when it comes to my chocolate over the years! I was hoping this would be a great guilt and calorie-free option to get a chocolate fix.

I used this eyeshadow palette for a week straight, mixing up colour combinations on my eyes as well as switching out eye primers and brushes. After seven days in a row, I gave up. I wear makeup to make myself feel beautiful, and sometimes I just come across makeup items that have the opposite effect. Every time I wore this palette, I felt like I was having a bad makeup day. Needless to say, after seven days in a row, I really was unhappy with my appearance. Because of this, my only conclusion is this palette is definitely not for me. If you have it and are able to make it work well, I am so happy for you! Unfortunately that was not the case for me, and I can only write about my own personal experiences. As for me, I've already dropped this palette like a hot potato.

Have you tried the Covergirl TruNaked Chocoholic eyeshadow palette? I’d love to hear about your experiences with it!

Until next time, dear readers, have a wonderful day!
XO!

  1. What a shame that this palette was such a disappointment for you. I like the cool-toned neutrals, and the swatches look more than promising. Too bad they don't blend well. You definitely gave it a good test.

  2. Such a shame this one didn’t work out, i was intrigued by the swatches but think I’ll be passing after reading how hard the formula was to work with. Thanks for testing it out so well!

  3. Bummer that this didn't seem to work for you. I'm loving the shimmery shades in it. I don't need my shadows to be food scented but I agree, if they smell off - it's a fail.

  5. The synthetic smell sounds awful, and patchy on the eye? Count me out as well! We're seeing some very "meh" palettes (not just formula, in terms of colours as well) of late, aren't we? I hope the Colour of 2019 is electric blue or something, just so we can see an end to those ubiquitous reddish/orangey/burgundy warm neutrals.

  7. The shades are pretty, what a bummer that the performance doesn't measure up. I appreciate your review, tho. I'll avoid it.

  8. I totally agree with everything you said. I was drawn in by the one color that leaned green on my skin, but on the whole, not a great experience

  10. I'm so sick of the fragrance in these palettes. I have a Revolution palette that drives me nuts with the chocolate smell. While the colors look pretty I think it would be boring in the long run.

  11. I'm usually a huge fan of their trunaked palettes but perhaps this one they prioritized the scent over formula?

  14. I have all the Too faced chocolate bar palettes and I love them. The scent is like hot cocoa and smells legit. The original is going to be $25 for Ulta 21 days of beauty. Try it! It’ll make up for this palette!

  15. I was all set to get this based off your first photo because I tend to wear mainly brown on my eyes but after reading your thoughts I'll have to pass. I'm not thriled at the thought it if being scented and I need something that blends easily since I'm very unexperienced with makeup and need all the help I can get with application.
